Resident Spotlight: Meet Karen Scian

In our last resident spotlight we introduced you to Lindsay Coulter a professional photographer living in The Barrel Yards with her fiancé and two furry pets. This month, we are welcomed into the home of Karen Scian, a teacher at Conestoga College, small business owner, and board member for the Waterloo Public Library. In 2006, she was a Waterloo City Councillor for two terms and continues to express her love for community in other ways. Karen came here for her post-secondary education, fell in love with the area and never left.
In this resident spotlight, we find out some of Karen’s favourite things about living at The Barrel Yards, why she loves living in Uptown Waterloo and much more.
Why did you choose The Barrel Yards?
I came to a point where I wanted somewhere to live that was easy to maintain and was located in Uptown Waterloo. I love Uptown, and I really wanted to be a walkable distance from some of my favourite spots.
So, what are your favourite Uptown spots?
Oh, where do I begin! The Waterloo Public Library, of course. I go there almost everyday, and not just because I am on the Board. You also cannot go wrong with Taco Farm. Don’t ask me what my favourite menu item is — they are all fantastic! There are so many other places to go, everywhere really. It’s hard to name them all.
What is it that you like most about living at The Barrel Yards?
It is just that — the distance to Uptown Waterloo. I love the area. I also really love to travel, and it’s so important to me to be about to lock the door and leave without worrying about my home.
Do you have a favourite on-site amenity here?
The yoga studio, hands down. Since the beginning I have been having one-on-one yoga session with my personal instructor and it is simply the perfect place. It is spacious, private, and obviously close to my home. I couldn’t ask for anything better!
What would you tell someone interested in living at The Barrel Yards?
Funny you ask that, because since I have lived here, many of my friends and family have actually moved in as well. I wouldn’t necessarily say I personally convinced them — but that’s because I didn’t have to! They sell themselves. Some of my best girlfriends now live here and I am even helping my mom move in this week!
We could only do this interview after your hair appointment. So of course I have to ask, where do you get your hair done?
Haha! I get my hair done at Element Hair. Kim and Lance do a great job and I have been going there for a very long time. I personally go to Wilhelmina, and she’s definitely part of the reason I keep going back!
