Resident Spotlight: Meet Asimina Arvanitaki

Thursday, June 23rd, 2016

Previously on The Barrel Yards blog we featured a Software Engineer from Google and a CMO from a startup in the area. This time, we are delighted to introduce our newest talent from the Perimeter Institute (PI) Dr. Asimina Arvanitaki.

Working at PI since 2014, Dr. Arvanitaki specializes in creating well-documented phenomena in smaller, controllable environments and testing its theories for ‘unexpected deviations’. We were lucky enough to receive her presence in Waterloo after she graduated from Stanford with her PhD under the work of Savas Dimopoulus, a widely respected Greek physicist.

In this spotlight we appreciate her involvement in the community by sharing some of her latest and greatest accomplishments advancing our understanding of the world as we know it.

Dr. Arvanitaki is the latest recipient of the $8-million Aristarchus Chair in Theoretical Physics, and the first female chair holder since the Perimeter Institute’s inception in 1999. When asked, Arvanitaki attributes her motivations for getting to where she is today by asking the question, why?

I just want to know why things are the way they are,” she says. “It’s the ‘why’ that drove me to physics, and still drives me.” she said when speaking to Maclean’s Zane Schwartz during their exclusive interview. “This is the story of experiment,” says Arvanitaki. “You just have to look. Even if you don’t find anything, that doesn’t mean you stop. If you don’t look, you don’t know.

We are happy to house the best and brightest talent at The Barrel Yards Rental Community.
