Summer means something different to everyone. For many, it’s the time of year to cash in our vacation time; whether that means a weeklong getaway or a mini vacation, we anxiously wait for our next summer break.
During long summer days we travel, we take in the tranquility and enjoy the serenity of nature, we explore far off worlds, take day trips, we find the mini paradise in our backyards. We look to escape to private havens for comfort and enjoyment.
Every year thousands of pedestrians and tourists visit Uptown Waterloo to enjoy all the upbeat social activities and local adventures. Uptown Waterloo is a leader in nurturing events such as The Jazz Festival, Waterloo Busker Carnival and Open Streets which provides planned activities connecting us to heritage and culture.
An unplanned underground activity is the Uptown Cocktail & Ale Trail. For beer lovers, it’s your Ontario Guide to local beer and cocktails in Uptown Waterloo. A more casual way to stroll the great neighborhoods surrounding our inner city, take in the shops, with a little bit of restaurant hopping to enjoy cool refreshing drink on a hot summer’s day.
The Barrel Yards Residents are fortunate to have all these activities only steps from their front door. If you’re looking for entertainment, a romantic night out, or fun times with friends, Uptown has something for everyone.
A perk for the Residents of Barrel Yards is the proximity to the Waterloo Park. It’s a hidden gem of Waterloo known as the “jewel of the city”. It’s a private oasis for Residents with easy access to enjoy as if it were their own backyard. With 45 hectares of plush green landscapes and primed parkland, it’s a perfect convenience located directly across from our community. It’s not possible to take in all the adventures of the Waterloo Park in just one day! Another convenience to our residents, is that it is available for them whenever they want! It just requires a few steps across the street.

Trails
A wonderful way to get moving! If you love walking and taking in nature, the park offers you the perfect opportunity to get connected. The canopy of trees along the paved paths, Victorian gardens, and winding trails surprise you of how large the park really is! You feel the significance hidden gem has for our city.
For the Love of Sports!
If you are active or want to become more active, the City of Waterloo has sports programs in Waterloo Park. Filled with multiple fields including; 4 baseball diamonds, 2 soccer fields, 1 rugby field and a cricket pitch, these are only a few activities available in this amazing outdoor space. Ultimate pick up frisbee, yoga classes and one-off events are always happening.
The Eby Farmstead/Animal Farm
Another uplifting way to connect to nature is this little farm filled with a variety of domesticated animals. The exotic birds and peacocks are an entertaining way to get started. As they strut their stuff showcasing their magnificent beauty. Don’t forget to make your way round to visit the miniature ponies, goats, llamas and so much more.
Lions Lagoon Splash Pad
For residents with wee ones, visiting grandchildren or nephews and nieces’, the splash pad is an opportunity to take to play outside. A perfect excuse to be a kid at heart for an afternoon! Right beside the park is The Park Inn Concession Stand for refreshments. Enjoy snacks, drinks and ice cream or a full lunch meal! In additional, playgrounds with swings, slides and other fun climbing adventures can be found on the grounds.
Picnic Shelters
Planning a reunion, birthday party or special event? Waterloo Park is all about connecting family and community with rental locations offering BBQ set ups, sheltered booths and space to gather friends and family. Grist Mill & Log School House
Looking to take in some nostalgia form the past? The Grist Mill is a replica of Abraham Erb Grist Mill. A beautiful attraction located on Silver Lake.
The Log School house is the oldest standing schoolhouse in the Waterloo Region built in the 1800’s. It’s quaint charm and rustic exterior is an attractive quality situated on the hill in the Waterloo Park. Symbolic to our childhood memories and youthful spirit associated to the beautiful landscapes of this amazing setting.
